Babci (or Babcia) is the Polish word for Grandmother. My Pra Babci (great-grandmother) came to the US in 1900, at age 12, from a small village in southern Poland called Posada Jasliska. This village is in the Carpathian Mountains a couple of kilometers from the Slovak border. At one time it was a major trading center between Poland and Slovakia. Above photos L to R: Magdalene Dylag (Pra Babci) and Rudolph Cebulewski (Pra Dziadek) on their wedding day; Pra Babci's childhood home in Jasliska, Poland; Pra Babci, Babci, Mom, and me at my Baptism.
